Vine Drawings by Joe A. MacGown
Below is a list of vines occuring in Mississippi that I have drawn either from specimens I collected locally in Okitbbeha County, Mississippi, or from herbarium specimens from the collection of Sydney McDaniel, former curator of the herbarium at Mississippi State University. The list is not all inclusive by any means, but should give a good idea of the genera we have here in Mississippi at any rate. Many of the collections were from my yard (17 acres) located in the Sessums Community at the edge of Starkville, Mississippi in Oktibbeha County, which is in the Black Belt Prairie region of our state. Click the scientific name to view the drawing of the species. These drawings were originally done for Gwen Perkins, a botanist who used to live in Starkville. She wrote a book entitled "Vine Tips", which included my drawings of vines below. The book can be purchased at Amazon.com [link]. Although I don't get any of the proceeds from the book, I recommend it just for her anecdotal style of writing. She also wrote a book on ferns, which I illustrated with silhouettes of ferns, entitled "Fern tips: More than most people want to know about ferns of the southeastern coastal plains."
